Reflection Hymn

Note how Jesus says that his own witness isn't the only testimony on which he bases his authority (5:31 - ..."if I alone beat witness about myself, my testimony is not true.") He references the testimony of John the Baptist, God, the Scriptures, Moses, as well as the holy spirit in other sections of John. Why did people still refuse to believe? Jesus says that despite all of this evidence, they "refuse to come to me that you may have life."

John 5 also shows the great authority that Christ receives from God, as well as the close working relationship that they have with each other to accomplish the purposes of redemption and salvation. Jesus says that he can do nothing of himself, illustrating the complete dependence he has on his Father for his authority and position - yet, because his Father loves him, He shows Jesus all that He is doing in His plans and purposes. There is great intimacy in this relationship, and we see a glimpse of the inner workings of this relationship in John 5.

John 6 answers the question, "Who can prepare a table in the wilderness...?" (Psalm 78:19) - and Jesus is teaching the people that what he is providing (true, eternal nourishment) will satisfy their deepest needs more than physical, temporal bread could ever do. He is the "bread of life" - and again, he shows that there is no life source apart from him. John 6 also shows us how his disciples continue to follow Jesus and see him as their only hope for truth despite their limited understanding of everything he was doing/saying.
