Reflection Hymn

In the first eight chapters, take note of the "kingly" or "regal" language that shows that Jesus is God's anointed king. In what ways do we see the kingdom of God colliding with the earthly rulers and authorities? How does the life and ministry of Jesus compare to what people thought the messiah would be like?

The Gospel of Matthew acts as a bridge between the Old and New Testaments, drawing our attention to how Christ fulfills the old covenant promises and prophecies. What are some of the OT Scriptures which Matthew quotes? What are some of the symbolic language that is used to draw our attention to OT narratives (i.e., Christ's 40 days in the wilderness being tempted)?

The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) is a declaration of what life looks like as a part of God's kingdom, where He rules and reigns through the person and work of Christ. What are some of the characteristics of "kingdom living"? Which of these characteristics are most striking to you (i.e., "Blessed are those that are persecuted...")? How does God ruling and reigning change every aspect of our lives?
